Black Walnut Growing Guide (Short Version)

1. Collect Seeds (Fall)

  • Gather fallen nuts.

  • Remove husks (wear gloves).

  • Rinse.

  • Float test: sink = good.

2. Cold Stratify (Winter)

  • Needs 90–120 days cold + moist.

  • Outside: nuts in moist sand/peat in rodent-proof box.

  • Fridge: bag with damp sand/peat at 33–41°F.

  • Check monthly.

3. Germination (Spring)

  • White root (radicle) appears first.

  • Plant as soon as root shows.

4. Potting

  • Use deep pots (taproot).

  • Soil: well-drained mix with some sand.

  • Plant nut 1–2" deep.

  • Keep moist, not soggy.

  • Full sun.

5. Seedling Care

  • Water deeply weekly.

  • More sun = stronger growth.

  • Protect from squirrels/rabbits.

  • Repot if root hits bottom.

6. Planting Outdoors

  • Best time: early spring or late fall.

  • Full sun, deep soil.

  • Hole = root depth, twice as wide.

  • Plant with root collar at soil level.

  • Water well.

  • Mulch (not against trunk).

  • Use tree guard.

7. After Planting

  • Keep watered first year.

  • Maintain weed-free, mulched circle.

  • Protect from deer.

  • Expect slow top growth early (taproot developing).

Summary:
Collect → cold stratify → deep pot → sun + moisture → plant in spring/fall → mulch + protect → slow start, strong long-term growth.
